TabStacks Chrome Extension  ·  Last updated: May 7, 2026

Short version: TabStacks does not collect, transmit, or sell any personal data. All tab and group state is stored locally on your device. A dismissable navigation bar is displayed at the top of your browser tabs to let you switch between them. It never reads or extracts page content. The only external network call is an optional license key verification with Gumroad when you activate a Pro license.

1. What data TabStacks accesses #

To group and display your tabs, TabStacks reads three things about each open tab: its URL (to identify the domain), its title, and its favicon. This information never leaves your browser. It is used only to build the tab groups and render the switcher bar.

A dismissable navigation bar is displayed at the top of your browser tabs. It only shows navigation controls so you can switch between grouped tabs. It does not read, record, or transmit any content from the pages you visit.

2. What TabStacks stores on your device #

TabStacks saves the following data locally on your device:

Active tab group state is cleared automatically when a stack is dissolved. Disabling the extension removes all stored group state from your device.

3. Why tab groups may persist in Chrome #

Chrome does not give extensions a way to delete tab groups directly (see Chrome tabGroups API reference). The only way to remove a group is to ungroup its tabs. TabStacks does this automatically for groups it manages when stacks are dissolved or the extension is disabled. However, if you uninstall the extension while tab groups are open, those visual groups will remain in Chrome and must be closed or ungrouped manually. This is a Chrome limitation, not a choice by TabStacks.

Additionally, when you close a window that contains a TabStacks-managed group, Chrome records that group in its tab groups panel. TabStacks cannot see or remove those saved groups. You can manage them directly in Chrome via the tab strip or Chrome's tab groups panel.

4. License verification (Pro users only) #

If you activate a Pro license, TabStacks contacts Gumroad to confirm your license key is valid. Only your license key and a product identifier are sent: no browsing history or personal data. This check happens once when you activate and periodically to keep your license current. Gumroad's own privacy policy governs how they handle that request.

Free users of TabStacks make no external network requests at all.

5. Why TabStacks needs access to your browser #

TabStacks requires access to your tabs and browser windows to group them by domain, and permission to display a navigation bar inside your browser tabs. No page content is read, stored, or transmitted.

6. Data sharing #

TabStacks does not sell, share, or disclose your data to any third party, except for the license verification with Gumroad described in the License verification section.

7. Your privacy rights #

Because TabStacks stores no personal data on any server, there is nothing for us to provide, delete, or export on request. If you have questions about your rights related to the Gumroad license verification, please refer to Gumroad's Privacy Policy. For anything else, reach us via the Contact section.

8. Children #

TabStacks does not collect personal data from anyone, including children under 13.

9. Changes to this policy #

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be updated. Continued use of the extension after a change means you accept the updated policy.
